Castles and The Beauty of Nature

It’s been a week on the new trail; Weserbergland-weg, and we already feel welcomed and at home. It has been a tough walk with a lot of uphill and some smaller mountains of 350 meters. This week has been a busy one so let us take it from the beginning.

We left the camping south of Porta Westfalica after some days of rest and because of the rest and good weather our moods were on top. Also we owe a great deal of our good mood to one of our new found friends Sebastian and his Girlfriend. He really liked our whole thing and wanted to sponsor us and help in some way, so he gave us some protein bars and more gas for our kitchen. That was really nice and we thought that was all, later when we checked out from the camping we found out that he had paid for almost our whole stay there! Wow, that was the best surprise we could have ever gotten. Thanks once again, we will never be able to repay such genuine goodness.

After the first days we noticed that there are much more trash bins on this trail than on the last one and we feel like the littering is less, so far. As you can guess we can of course not take all trash we find during our hikes, especially not when it looks like this:

Otherwise we’ve been doing a lot more of camping in the actual forests instead of camping sites, and it seems like it’s more ok to do it here as well. We’ve been talking to a lot of the locals and they think it’s a cool thing to do and really encourage it, they’ve been warning us for cold nights and wild boars. If that’s their concern about illegal camping in the forests we might be fine.

The sun has been shining this week and the weather has been kind to us, the nature here is absolutely wonderful. We can really feel the season changing and the nature preparing for spring.

We’ve been in the nicest woods and been up the mountains with great views. Trying to take pictures of everything and the great moments we have, it’s easy to forget that we want to experience it through our own eyes as well.

Otherwise we feel like this trail is much heavier than the first trail, mostly because of the hills. We use different kind of muscles now than we did before so it’s like starting all over again. Even though we feel like this is heavy, it might be a good warm up for Switzerland.

Some cool things we’ve seen is the castles, for sure. We’ve spent the night in two castles this week, the first one was however not that expensive. It’s a ruin of “Osterburg”, once probably a magnificent fortress.

Now pretty much just some hills and valleys.

But it felt like we lived like royals, like a five star hotel rated by nature itself. It’s amazing that such a great building once stood where we slept, not that the building itself has any meaning to us. But there is almost no sign left of it, the nature has devoured it completely and if you didn’t know there was a building once, you could not have guessed it.

The next castle we lived in however we paid for, ironically it was the cheapest alternative in the whole area, with a dog of course. This was only 200 meters of our trail so it felt like the place for us, resting for a couple of days and recharging the batteries of all our stuff. Everything was drained, and our bodies needed that rest. The castles name is Schaumburg and this area is really nice and the castle itself is really cool.

The reason our batteries couldn’t be charged was also because our solar panel we had bought before our trip just won’t work. We had a product from “powertraveler” called “solarmonkey” and it seems like it is broken already probably damaged by moisture or something.

We’ve also had some problems with the GoPro, so you’ll have to excuse us for not posting the video of Vatties morning workout yet. Hopefully it’ll be up in the week to come.

Thank you everyone for the continued support and that you follow us on our social media as well!! Vielen Dank!

Auf Viedersehen!
