Sunny Days and Winter Nights

This week we have walked 94 kilometers, from Hameln to Silberborn. The weather has been amazing and almost every day we’ve had sunshine, the heat is rising and we adapt slowly. The nights however is winter cold and nearly every day we’ve had an icy tent in the morning. But some nights gets even worse than just cold, the night till today gave us more to think about. Without any warning lightning struck not far from us, and quickly a storm arouse. Normally we have nothing against thunder, not even Vattie but this night on more than 300 meters high ground in a tent was a little bit more frightening. However some mornings are much more peaceful.

Weserbergland-weg takes us usually through the mountains but we chose to rest our poor knees for a day and walk along the river “Weser” instead.

Otherwise we love that the trail takes us through the mountains and up the hills, the reward of the heavy walking upwards usually is very much worth the pain. We’ve come across many towers and viewpoints and some of these spots are used for paragliding, which we just have to try someday. We’ve (Cecilia) noticed that some viewpoints however are more suited to someone… Not so short.

It’s not always the highest points which are the rewards sometimes the valleys are an astonishing sight. For example we walked up Holzberg, with the nicest place to rest we enjoyed the view with some lunch over the valley.

Another beautiful valley we went through was Hellental, apart from being a wonderful place of nature the little town also called Hellental was really cozy. Definitely a place where we would feel right at home.
In this area we’ve had good luck with clean water springs and running water, fine enough for us to use. We try to use as much water from the nature as possible, as long as it’s deemed drinkable. We also have small pills which cleanse the water from bacteria and stabilize its ph.

The trail even took us right through a monastery, Amelungsborn. A happy little place with charismatic people, they live inside of the church’s outer walls. They even had an apartment for pilgrims to rent. We however decided to stay at a nearby windshelter.

We as usual clean up the place before pitching our tent, and here we found a lot of unnecessary trash, they had a big trash bin at the place.

By coincidence an hour later we had cleaned the place, men from the community came to clean the place up from trash. Luckily for them we had already done their work so they could take a break and rest for a bit before they moved on. So now even the community workers know about us.

We’re looking forward to the last bit of this trail and after a day’s rest we are ready to keep on hiking. If there is anything you wish to know more about when reading our blog, don’t be afraid to write.
