Weserbergland-weg Finnished!

We have started our third trail but before you we get ahead of ourselves, here's a summary of Weserbergland-weg.

This blog post has only been made possible because of the really nice owner and personel at Sächsischer Hof Hotel in Dermbach!

This trail has been a lot of fun and we think it is one of the better hiking trails we have done so far. The trail gives you a mix of the German nature, big forests, mountains, a lot of culture and a lot of historical monuments and castles. The viewpoints have been great and there are a lot of towers on this trail so you can enjoy a better view. We have never before seen as much towers, castles and fortresses so close together and it has been a really nice touch on this trail. For the ones who like walkable mountains and intervals we totally recommend this trail.

Another nice touch is that we have come across some local culture, the Grimm brothers, writers of amazing folktales. They are of great value to the Germans and they even have a hiking trail where you can take part of the brother Grimm tales and enjoy the nature at the same time, Märchenland-weg.

Sadly we have come across some littering; we gathered 35 trash bags on this trail, a little bit more than the first trail. This can depend on that we have trained our eyes to find the trash and we are now more use to the weight on our backpacks and can give the surroundings a bit more of our attention. Totally with our own trash included, we have collected 57 bags of trash since we left Sweden.

We can feel the difference since we started our journey and we have more muscles and stamina than before. We feel healthier and more peaceful, no inner stress. Hiking during low season is for us preferable, since we feel like we get a more personal greeting and care from personnel in restaurants and in the different lodgings.

While walking this trail we’ve seen the change from winter to spring, being out every day and always in the nature like we are, it’s a wonderful thing to experience. With the change of weather come also other hikers. When the days offer more sunlight it’s more attractive for people to spend their day in nature. Many of the other hikers we meet often seem to think there is no trash along the hiking trails. We think it’s because they don’t want to see it or simply don’t care, since it’s such a common thing nowadays. Hopefully after talking to us, maybe they’ll change their perspective.

Another very cool thing happened at the end of this trail, we were interviewed by a local newspaper in the North Hessen area. Somehow it seems like we are making a greater impact here than in Sweden, what the cause for this is we don’t know, maybe it is just because we are Swedish.

The worst part about this spontaneous hiking lifestyle we have is when we have to wait for a longer time. Bad timing and poor planning from our side forced us to wait almost a whole week in Hameln. It’s good to learn how to accept these misshapenings and use the energy to learn new stuff. Like Christian who is learning how to carve wood and besides from polishing her German, Cecilia is fixing stuff that is broken. She has already fixed the tent once and for further recognition, it’s good to have a sewing kit on a hike like this.

Another thing you can get tired of is the food, after eating soup nearly every day we’re thinking of changing our food-routines. Chocolate bars and sausages are another thing we might want to switch soon enough.

We’re not alone on this trip; Vattie has her ups and downs as well. She’s experiencing new stuff every day just like we are. One thing however she never seems to get tired of is all the leaves; they are in almost every forest and the dryer the better. We will not spoil too much of Vatties experience yet, because next week’s blog post will be all about Vattie and how we have experienced her journey so far.

If you haven’t noticed, we have posted a small video from Vatties perspective on Facebook.

We didn’t get far into our third trail; Der Hochrhöner, before we found our first pieces of trash. This will be a nice trail to follow and we are looking forward to the mountains of doubled size than those of Weserbergland-weg.

Frohe Oster!
