Andorra To Spain
When we got to Andorra we had only a couple of goals in mind; first and most important was to meet Christian’s mother and sister and spend as much time with them as possible. Second was to climb a mountain in the Pyrenees. Check and check! Most of the pictures seen from Andorra we owe to Christian’s sister and her trigger happy fingers!

We accomplished many more great things there of course and some of those things were hard to imagine that we would be so lucky to do. But let us take it from the top. We learned quickly that it was harder to get around with a dog than we thought. After we learned that getting into Andorra from the French side was literally no problem at all, we thought it would be the opposite. While in Andorra we realized that we couldn’t even take a bus with Vattie on board if she wasn’t in a cage and even only some taxis would accept her.

Luckily the hotel was really dog friendly with allowance of the dog everywhere but in the restaurant. Yes… We did stay at a hotel; it was not only more convenient but also easier for Christian’s mother and sister for us to live just next to each other. They came directly from Sweden so only moments after their arrival we decided to use the swimming pool. Apparently it’s cold in Sweden so it was very appreciated indeed.

As soon as we could we started climbing the mountains. The mountains of the Pyrenees are very different to the Alps in many ways but most noticeable is probably the altitude and the peaks. Most peaks were accessible by foot it seemed in contrary to the Alps where the peaks often require climbing equipment. But the nature and everything still seemed so different compared to the Alps even though there were mountains everywhere you looked.

The climb up was fair and it was far from the hardest climb we have done, but if you are inexperienced with this kind of hiking it can be tough. However we walked along a gravel road, witch was a nice and easy way to get to the top. Christian’s mother and sister managed the walk very well with only a couple of setbacks that showed that they are not regular hikers but that’s of course understandable. The feeling of hiking itself is a boost of energy but to show friends and loved ones what you yourself love about it is a feeling that’s indescribably satisfying. They both loved the scenery and the hike up the mountain and hopefully they liked just as much as we did if not even more. We did the mountain called Pic De Carroi.

We knew that there was a possibility to see Vultures in Andorra however we didn’t think we would actually see some, but we did. It was an amazing experience to see these huge birds flying relatively close to us even being able to see them from above at some points. The ones we saw were the Griffon Vultures and their spectacular way of soaring through the sky was an amazing thing to behold from the top of the mountain.

All in all we were very happy with the experience of doing this together with family. Since we took the same way down as we walked on our way up, we decided to pick trash only on our way down. In total we picked 90 liters of trash on 7km which was from the top of the mountain and back to the closest village called Sispony. This makes an average of 12,8 liters of trash /km. Which makes this our dirtiest trek so far however not having made any other hikes in Andorra it is a unfair calculation of how much litter there is to be found in the small country.

After family time in Andorra we had many troubles of just trying to get out from Andorra into Spain with a dog. They just wouldn’t allow a dog on any bus from Andorra to Barcelona if it was not in a cage… So we just had to buy a cage for Vattie, when we started this hike that was definitely not something we thought we had to buy for our hiking dog throughout the journey.

However we managed to get to Spain and all the way to our current host. She invited us many months ago when she found our blog on the internet. So she offered a place to sleep and a minor tour of the National Park of Montseny, a mountain close to where she lives.
Some years back she started her own company offering tourists a more Ecological way of tourism. She knows the area around Barcelona and to offer tourists a unique experience in the area she specializes on close by natural parks and local produced and/or ecological restaurants. She does this to enlighten people of how they can change the tourism in its whole. Being a responsible tourist is becoming more and more relevant when you travel anywhere today.
Please make the effort and if you are interested in what she does check out her Webpage: HERE

We are very thankful for what she’s done for us and the tour in Montseny was a beautiful small hike of 15km approximately with many things to see. One of the most appreciated views is when you can be on a mountain and see the sea, this being the Mediterranean Sea.

Don’t forget to look at all the amazing pictures we’ve taken throughout our journey on our Facebook page among our albums: HERE
We’ve also made a small album of our time in Andorra that’s brand new!
See you very soon!
