Hiking dog

Before you decide to bring your dog

  • Make sure your dog will enjoy your way of traveling!

  • Check with your veterinary so your best friend is healthy enough for travel.

  • Is it okay to bring a dog to your decided destination? Check with the Embassy!

  • Sometimes it can be useful to also check with the customs department.

  • It is not allowed crossing the borders with a dog on a bus since you don't go through a customs clearance.

  • Are you vaccinated? Don't forget the dog might need some as well.

  • Did you know that even a dog needs a passport to travel, so make sure all the papers are in the right order.

Useful things to know

  • Some countries prefer you have a muzzle on your dog in public spaces, make sure your dog is used to it.

  • If you are camping with a tent, make sure your dog is comfortable with the tent.

  • If your dog will have its own backpack it is important you follow the recommendations to begin with, and even start a  little easier. How much a dog is allowed to carry depends on its weight. We don't recommend a dog carrying a backpack for several months.

  • Some dogs won't eat where they sleep, giving the food outside of the tent might help.

  • Strenuous exercise calls for proper nourishment! Something extra might be needed.

Usefull commands

  • Basic commands like "sit", "lie down" and "heel" will always be of great value.

  • To be able to hike without a leash in the safest way possible its important that your dog retreats to you when called.

  • Commands that tells the dog wich direction to go. Right, left, continue etc.

  • "Up" has been of great value for Vattie, especially when we climbed rocky areas.

  • We have also thought of bear encounters, and teaching your dog how to play dead might be helpfull...
